Causes and Risk Factors

Researchers are investigating possible causes and risk factors for allergies, including indoor allergies. Diet, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors are being studied as possible indoor allergy causes.

Genetics (heredity) is a strong risk factor for all types of allergies. If one parent is affected by allergies, each child has a 30% chance of also developing an allergy. If both parents have allergies, the risk is about 70%.
